Historic Window Preservation Information

Windows are important and distinctive features of historic facades, and one the hardest to replicate if lost.  Most of the original window sashes in the districts were crafted locally utilizing old growth timber and pre-industrial glass, and are indicative of the period when they were fabricated.  In order to preserve the unique character of the structures in Harvard’s Historic Districts, homeowners are encouraged to make window maintenance and repair a priority.  Replacement windows cannot replicate the unique look of the originals.  Storm window design and efficiency has dramatically improved and coupled with window maintenance can provide a high degree of energy efficiency.

Original windows were constructed from old growth wood and have a great ability to withstand New England weather.  It is a fact that these windows can function for hundreds of years, despite the recent trend to replace historic window sashes with alternatives that will surely not survive.

Below are links to resources to assist homeowners in the care and repair of historic windows as well as information regarding energy efficiency and sustainability.
